The Internet & My Faith Formation

Earlier this week I spent 2 days on a Scripture Union on a residential for associate trust workers and we spent some time exploring the idea of ministry in a digital age and in doing so looked at how the current generation are growing up in a world where they don’t remember not having computers or mobile phones.

If I’m honest I think I probably join this group of digital natives (as they call them). We got our first home PC when I was about 8 but we’d always had computers at school up until that point and now my life is fully wired thanks to a collection of devices and websites.

However in all the thinking about this digital world I was reflecting on some of my own experiences of technology and faith.

Of course back when I was 16/7 Facebook didn’t exist…Bebo and Myspace did but neither did a huge amount however the most exciting place for me to be online was the Norwich Youth for Christ forum. In fact many of the people on that forum are people I still keep in contact with today.

As a young person exploring faith the NYFC forum gave me a place I could ask questions and explore ideas in a safe place (thanks to the moderators who lurked around keeping everything nice and friendly and sharing their wisdom) and I can truly reflect now and appreciate the chance it gave me to ask things that in all fairness I may have never got an opportunity to ask at youth group (so thank you Mark Tuma!).

But what role does the internet have on the faith formation of young people today?

My main critique of Facebook is that it’s stole traffic! The NYFC forum and CROPS Forum (which I helped to start in my gap year and eventually close a few years back) got quieter and quieter. I guess the novelty of hanging out somewhere online has gone and whilst I can’t fault Facebook for moving people I do feel like that opportunity to ask questions online has gone because even the discussion threads on Facebook don’t get used a huge amount.

Some ideas…

I still believe the internet has a huge role to play in the faith formation on young people. The answer to every question can be found on google but this is risky so is there a place youth workers and young people can engage in faith conversation? Here’s a couple of ideas;

Formspring – Whilst fairly annoying I think youth workers can use the opportunity to link it to Facebook and encourage young people to ask questions anonymously on it…it’s got potential but probably not for real discussion.

Facebook Page and Status – Perhaps the simple answer is to post a question on your Facebook page and wait for the comments…is this what detached youth work on Facebook looks like? (probably not)

Forum – Is the web forum really dead? I’m a little bit tempted to create one and find out!

Anymore thoughts?

The Site Looks Better!

After the hack the other day my wordpress theme broke so I took advantage of it being broken and spent the last few hours adapting a funky new site.

There’s not a lot new other than a few bits of content moving but the new theme does feel a lot more spacious and classy.

(In turn my Myspace, Bandcamp and Twitter pages have been updated)

The Joy of Teen Sex

Upon the recommendation of youth work magazine I’ve been tuning in to several episodes of Channel 4′s ‘The Joy of Teen Sex’; a TV show which aims to discuss teen sex problems and experiences using a team of experts in an open an honest way using their ‘sex shop’.

If you haven’t seen it then the chances are as you watch it you’ll suddenly feel like you’ve become Jeremy Kyle and be shocked at it…that or you’ll wonder why your teenage life wasn’t like that!

Statistics

The statistics on the show feel very biased. As a youth worker I know that a lot of the stats they use have probably been produced by asking a very select group of young people. To top that off if you apply the American Pie ‘rule of 3′ to the statistics then I suspect you’re far closer to the facts.

Approach Of The Show

To an extent I think it’s important that we’re coming out and saying ‘yes teenagers are having sex’ and addressing some of the issues in the show such as being uncomfortable with aspects of your body and practicing safe sex…addressing the issue of drugs and alcohol in sex are also important however I can’t help but feel the show is a little to flippant and casual.

The general feeling of the show is that young people are taking part in sex…but not just sex but in drugs and alcohol around sex and also having multiple partners, threesomes etc. My problem with this is that it feels like it’s just too accepting and in particular for ordinary teenagers watching I think it can create an unrealistic expectation of sex and also encourage young people to feel pressured into having sex earlier on and with more people.

Teen Journalist ‘Billie’

One aspect of the show which I think has been positive is features with teen journalist Billie who whilst isn’t a gifted interviewer (or especially engaging for that matter) is very honest and perhaps more realistic in her approach. For example Billie has explored glamor modeling, pole dancing and drugs, alcohol and sex. Unlike the rest of the show the young journalist has talked to people who use them, had some experiences (where appropriate) and made a very honest and open opinion about them…often saying that she wouldn’t do it or just doesn’t get it and in my opinion for young people watching the show this is the most useful section…Billie makes it acceptable to not like what everyone else is doing.

Overall…

Overall I think ‘The Joy of Teen Sex’ is a scary programme. I think it’s a risky and potentially damaging programme for young people to watch and probably scary for parents. As a youth worker it does make me aware of some issues facing young people and is certainly worth watching from an informative perspective but the attitude it promotes towards sex is just that little bit too accepting and encouraging for my liking.

Have you seen it? Thoughts? Comments?

Top Albums of 2010

It’s that time of the year again when I have some spare time to ponder the year gone by…and mainly I’m pondering the music from the year gone by. I feel like this year I’ve experienced less anticipation about albums but purchased more old music…however as I scroll through my iTunes library there are some real stand-out albums from this year…in no particular order:

Alkaline Trio – This Addiction

Earlier this year I reviewed this album as one of my favourite punk rock albums in a long time and now, even at the end of the year I stand by that. This Addiction is a fantastic blend of melodic pop-punk with deep lyrics. It’s energetic and fun and the bonus version including a DVD and a whole host of bonus acoustic tracks makes it such a good listen. This album has been everywhere this year…it’s accompanied me during my gym work-outs, it kept us company on the journey to France and it’s been played endless times around the house.

Good Charlotte – Cardiology

Once again this is an album I reviewed earlier this year and is certainly an album which both myself and Jo love (so much so about a week after buying it Jo put it in her car and I haven’t seen it since!). Cardiology sees Good Charlotte returning to the pop-punk that first sold me to their music 8 years ago and is a fantastic album and certainly worthy of my top 5 of 2010!

Ben Folds & Nick Hornby – Lonely Avenue

Lyrics have always been important to me in music…whether they’re just ‘blow you away’ challenging or something simple that you can relate to I’ve always appreciated the words within the music I listen to and this is why Lonely Avenue is such an awesome album. The concept is simple; well known author (High Fidelity, About A Boy) Nick Hornby wrote the lyrics and Ben Folds (king of the piano!) wrote the music. The result is an album which is simply stunning both musically and lyrically.

Owl City – Ocean Eyes

2010 was the year a campaign tried to get a Christian number 1 however the campaign organisers failed to catch on that we’d already had a Christian at number 1 a matter of weeks earlier. Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’ is probably known by millions of people and the album it’s taken from makes it into my top 5 of 2010. Like ‘Fireflies’ ‘Ocean Eyes’ is light, catchy pop which cannot fail to bring a smile to your face. This album was pretty much all I listened to solidly for the 2 weeks when I first brought it (much to Jo’s annoyance)…it’s a fantastic pop album…good, clean fun!

B.O.B – The Adventures of Bobby Ray

As a big Paramore fan and follower of the amazing Hayley Williams on Twitter when I head she’d collaborated with a rapper I headed straight to youtube to check it out and it feels like I’ve heard it almost everywhere since. I am of course talking about the song ‘Airplanes’ which mixes a beautiful chorus lead vocal part done by Hayley Williams with the rapping of B.O.B. Unusually for rap songs I like I actually brought the album and ‘The Adventures of Bobby Ray’ was certainly a good buy. It’s got plenty of catchy tunes and some clever lyrics and takes the final place in my top albums of 2010.

Free Christmas Song: In The Bleak Midwinter

I hate the majority of Christmas carols…in fact sit me in a carol service and I’ll stay quiet for a majority of the lyrics or moan about the theology (or lack of) behind them!

A couple of years ago I decided to re-write ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’ and actually add some theology to it and so all reference to snow went and keeping 2 original verses I added two more before them.

Since then I’ve used it in worship sets the last couple of years at ‘The Point’ and at ‘SPARK’ and the worship group here in South Cave are using it on Christmas day this year however I’ve never made a recording of it….until today!

This afternoon I went on a massive distraction and made a recording of it…and the result is probably a light stadium rock carol!

I’ve uploaded it here so click to have a listen and download

Here are the lyrics too… (1st 2 verses by me, 2nd 2 originals)

Mysteries surrounding, prophecies come true
Jesus, God incarnate,  God, yet human too
Mary trusted You, O God, always good and true
Giving birth to Jesus, For Him we worship you

For Jesus, God we praise you, died to save our souls
Stepped out into darkness, as it was foretold
Suffered death, was crucified, Jesus took my shame
For Jesus, God we praise you, death He overcame

Our God, heaven can’t hold You, nor the earth sustain
heaven and earth shall flee away, when You come to reign
in the bleak-midwinter, a stable-place sufficed
the lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ

Oh, what can I give Him, woeful as I am
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb
If I were a wiseman, I would do my part
Yet, what can I give You; I will give my heart

Snow Photos

Whilst the amount of snow we have in South Cave is a pain (meaning that we have a dead boiler and that I’ve dug my car out numerous times in the last couple of days) it does mean I’ve been able to get some lovely photos. Here’s 3 of my favourites…
