Music Of 2008

So in just a few days we shall enter 2009, the year that would have marked a century of Woolworths but will perhaps mark an interesting year for high street stores and will certainly show us whether Zavvi survives or not.

So on that musical note as we leave 2008 I thought I would post my favourite albums that have been released in 2008 and include a brief part of what I’m looking forward to listening to in 2009.

Jack’s Mannequin – The Glass Passenger (September) - I start with this album as it was one of my most anticipated albums of the year. On it’s release it wasn’t available in the UK so I ended up importing it from the U.S just to listen to it and I am actually listening to it as I type!

Jack’s Mannequin’s first album is one of my favourite albums of all time, full of brilliant piano-punk-pop which seems to be unique in sound and so the follow-up album was going to be tricky to beat.

Listening to ‘The Glass Passenger’ I don’t think I can say that it’s better than the first but I can’t say it’s worse, there’s more of ‘Something Corporate’ (the lead singers previous band) in this album but at the same time some more laid back tracks. The track ‘Hammers & Strings’ has completely took me, it’s slow, melodic and quite sad and has fast become one of my favourite songs ever. The rest of the album is well worth a listen too, I don’t think there’s a single bad track, it does take a bit of listening to though.

Paramore – The Final Riot (December) - Paramore were a band who’s album ‘Riot’ I bought earlier in the year and got completely hooked on and so receiving their live CD/DVD for Christmas made me very happy and having listened to the CD and watched the DVD I have to say it’s one of my favourites of 2008 for many reasons!

The DVD is refreshing, by this I mean that Paramore are all Christians (which I only discovered a couple of days ago) and so there is no swearing at the audience which is noticeable but doesn’t make them worse live…if anything it makes them more genuine and honest.

The live versions of all the tracks have been mixed perfectly, the vocals are clear and the instruments have been recorded brilliantly too. The band add variations to live tracks but at the same time keeping the songs original feel.

A must have pop-punk CD/DVD!

Slipknot – All Hope Is Gone (August) - I was driving in the summer and was in the process of changing CD’s when I heard ‘Physcosocial’ on the radio, I continued to listen eager to find out who was singing this awesome track only to be shocked that it was Slipknot.

I then purchased their album and got an even better surprise when the drums on the first track began reminding me that Joey Jordison was the drummer of Slipknow.

This album is totally different to what I expected from Slipknot (who I have to confess I hadn’t listened to before) the mix of heavy rock/metal and melodic vocals is spot on, there’s so many great tracks on here I couldn’t not add it to my top albums of 2008!

Ben Folds – Way To Normal (September) - It seems the good albums came out in the latter part of the year and Ben Fold’s ‘Way To Normal’ is one of them. Being quite a Ben Folds fan I was excited about this album and eagerly awaited it’s release and it was worth it!

Much like ‘The Glass Passenger’ it took some listening to get into it but it’s a brilliant album mixing a variety of piano-based styles ranging from traditional Ben Folds to the more experimental sounds he seems to do so well.

Lyrically the album mixes funny, clever lyrics with more serious songs that really get you thinking! Another one of 2008′s best albums!

Picking a 5th album is difficult so much of me wants to mention Relient K’s ‘The Birds and the bee-sides’ or Less Than Jakes ‘GNV FLA’ or even Alphabeats ‘This is Alphabeat’ but I think my final favourite of 2008 has to be…

Feeder – Silent Cry (June) - Feeder have spent the last few years since their drummer Jon Lee killed himself dissappointing me. Although their music has been good (and don’t get me wrong I love some of their songs of recent years) there seems to have been a distinct lack of that sound they had on ‘Polythene’, ‘Swim’ and ‘Echo Park’.

Silent Cry (in my opinion) is Feeder back to their best, melodic rock has been restored to the British band and I listened to the whole album on full volume during a drive to Spring Harvest waiting for the dissappointing track and I never found it! It’s a brilliant album and so becomes one of my 2008 favourites!

Most Dissappointing Of 2008?

With listening to albums from bands you know and love comes dissppointment and so the award for most dissappointing album has to go to Panic! At The Disco for Pretty. Odd which is actually Pretty. Crap. Their first album was so good, full of energy and fun. Filled with songs you just sing over and over again and Pretty Odd is the exact opposite.

Nine in the Afternoon was a good single and probably the only good song on the album, the rest of album is dull and lacks everything that made the first album great.

Moving onto 2009…

So I finish this post with what I am looking forward to for 2009…for starters I’m looking forward to hearing Fall Out Boy’s new album which should arrive this week.

I’m also looking forward to hearing the albums due to be released sometime this year by Relient K, Angels & Airwaves and Paramore.

Finally I’m hoping that Serj Tankian will get himself back into the studio and write another album!

Christmas!

Well it is now officially Christmas day so merry Christmas readers!

This year for the third year I went to midnight mass (and have just got home), although generally liturgy annoys me it’s something that’s quite nice once a year…or occasionally at the most and other than picking apart carol theology and accidentially singing ‘While wise men washed their socks’ I think it did quite well!!!

It’s nice to welcome in Christmas morning with a mind fixed on God…and at ten tomorrow I’ll be at Park Baptist’s Christmas day service…this is not to make me sound holy but to encourage you to find time on you Christmas day to stop reading my blog and focus on Jesus!

Yesterday me and Jo had officially been 2 years and in that time already managing to set a midnight mass tradition followed by the exchanging of our gifts to each other in the car in the early hours of Christmas morning I arrived home half an hour ago clutching a rather sexy ukulele! (Picture to follow)

It’s such a awesome gift to get, it shows that Jo knows me well enough to put up with my musical habits and that she listens…I purchased a mandolin (which i’m still trying to set up properly) a month or so ago and happened to say that at some point I’d learn Ukulele too and now I can…although should probably sleep now so that everyone is not disturbed by my Ukulele playing!

Finally David Crowder has posted an interesting Christmas blog here so have a read!

I hope all you blog readers have a brilliant Christmas Day and don’t forget the baby Jesus who is as white and middle class today as the day he was born in that nice cosy, hay-filled stable with it’s electric lanturns and cosy blanket filled mangers!

Zavvi Enters Administration

Up until now the so called credit-crunch hitting businesses hasn’t really had any real effect, the closure of MFI meant sub-standard furniture that falls apart when you try and move it would be harder to get, the end of the Officers club means dressing like a chav will be that little bit more difficult and the end of Woolworths meant…well other than memories of buying single there when younger nothing because who actually bought anything in Woolies? It just became an overpriced store with no clear purpose.

However today the BBC Announces that Zavvi has entered administration. This is sad for many reasons, firstly Zavvi is the closest music store to my office, secondly often it was cheaper on DVD’s than HMV and thirdly they gave me 10% discount as a student. It will be sad to see them go and it’ll leave some very big empty shops in shopping centres.

Correspondance with Tesco: Response

On the 20th November I wrote a letter to Tescos, a week later I posted it online under the title ‘Correspondance with Tesco’ informing the giant that I would be boycotting their shop. This post & comments made by blog readers led to my ‘Easy Ethical Shopping‘ post and last week I received a reply from Tesco!

However because the reply was in Hemsby and I was in Peterborough I only read the letter last night, so here it is! (click to enlarge)

Letter from Tesco

So there we have the response of Tesco, who are apparantly sad that I am taking my ‘customer’ else where…perhaps the letter would come across as more sincere had they bothered to proof read it.

There is no mention of my reasons for leaving them, no comment on my opinions of their practices or even denial.

However I am surprised to find they agreed to removing me from their system and it must have worked because I’ve received no e-mails from them in the last couple of weeks which is unusual.

I don’t think I’ve won against Tesco but nor did I expect to, a corporate giant like that cannot be beaten, however I still believe it’s important for every customer to have their opinion presented to companies, after all technially the customers needs should come first!

Life!

In my continued Tammin Sursok Facebook quest my friend request has been accepted so we are officially friends, I’ve sent her a message but so far no reply…I’m not even sure if it’s the real Miss Sursok!

In other news tonight marked the 2nd of 3 church Christmas events with a ‘Muppet Christmas Carol’ evening, it’s such a great film, it feels like Christmas now it’s been watched and with tomorrow evening being my last event before driving back to Great Yarmouth for 2 weeks off Christmas is fast approaching!

More Christmassy & not so Christmassy blogs soon!

Tammin Sursok

Back in 2006 I posted a blog titled ‘The Top 5 Good Mornings‘ detailing 5 of the most beautiful examples of the female form. Included in this list was Austrailian singer of Home & Away fame ‘Tammin Sursok’.

Now earlier I was doing a spot of spring cleaning on facebook and was cleaning up my groups. A while ago I created a Tammin Sursok Apreciation group and it’s now grown to over 100 (not many but having started with 2 I’m proud) and on the groups wall (of which I am founder and only officer) I have found this:

Tammin Talks To Me!!!

Now I don’t know if it genuinely is Tammin Sursok but I can but hope! I have now added her as a friend and I’m hoping she’ll accept and I shall try and message her in a nice than Ben like fashion!

Prayer – Who Do You Pray To?

I found this quote written by the editor of PostSecret.com on this weeks secrets

My mother has brain cancer. She was diagnosed during the holiday season last year. They told her she probably had two months to live. My mother is sitting in the room next to me, and will be here for the holidays this year.

I don’t believe in god, but I am praying for a miracle for your father. My mom got one.

I find it an interesting quote and it leaves me wondering who he is actually praying to if he doesn’t believe in God. The majority of definitions of prayer at dictionary.com talk use the word petition i.e. ‘to petition for something’ now all this is very well but who are you actually petitioning?

I guess those who don’t pray to God could have an open prayer, not directed at anyone in particular but prayed that in the emptiness surrounding there is someone or something listening out for these prayers of petition and prepared to answer them. I don’t know if I believe God answers prayers not directed at anyone particular but I suspect the answer is similar to the answer to the ‘Does God answer prayer?’ question.

Perhaps God does answer the prayer sent out into emptiness by the athiest in desparation, who knows but either way the PostSecret founder who I quoted at the beginning obviously had a undirected prayer answered whether it’s luck or God I don’t know but it’s an interesting thought…

In The Bleak Midwinter

I was asked to lead worship at ‘The Point’ last night, I love leading worship especially at youth events because young people tend to look like they want to worship God (often more so than adults), it being Christmas and all I thought a Christmas song would be good and I’ve always loved the final verse of ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’ but thought the rest was a little bit fluffy, so I thre away 2 verses and added 2 new ones so here is my version of ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’, the first two verses are written by me the last 2 are from the original with odd words changed.
Mysteries surrounding, prophecies come true
Jesus, God incarnate,  God, yet human too
Mary trusted You, O God, always good and true
Giving birth to Jesus, For Him we worship you

For Jesus, God we praise you, died to save our souls
Stepped out into darkness, as it was foretold
Suffered death, was crucified, Jesus took my shame
For Jesus, God we praise you, death He overcame

Our God, heaven can’t hold You, nor the earth sustain
heaven and earth shall flee away, when You come to reign
in the bleak-midwinter, a stable-place sufficed
the lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ

Oh, what can I give Him, woeful as I am
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb
If I were a wiseman, I would do my part
Yet, what can I give You; I will give my heart

Christmas Events

Ignoring the amount of unbiblical donkeys and assumptions of 3 wise men Christmas is a great time of year…in fact as a youth worker it’s one of my favourites.

Next week is the week of all the youth Christmas parties and other Christmassy events so it’s brilliant…it also means it’s only just over a week until I get 2 weeks off for Christmas which’ll be good.

So if you’d like to see me when I’m in Yarmouth let me know
