Correspondence With Tesco Part 1

Readers of this blog will have noticed a link to a website called ‘Tescopoly’ in the links section for sometime now. The website aims to unite those against Tesco and the numerous appalling practices which they implement.

In the last month I’ve been reading Andrew Simms book ‘Tescopoly’ which looks in depth into the practices of Tescos and the problem with the store on many levels. Having read this book I’ve been shocked at the way which Tescos treat everyone from suppliers (who they dictate prices too) and people who work for them (who they allow to worship themselves like a god) right up to local councils who are practically bullied into granting planning permission for Tescos because of the threat of an expensive, legal planning permission process if they turn down Tesco.

As a result of this I have made the decision to boycott Tesco stores…the only other company who I avoid are Nestle (although readers could argue I also avoid SSG Shops however I feel that they don’t really have stores to avoid!). I have just finished packing my clubcard and keyfob into an envelope alongside a letter informing Tesco of my decision and asking to be removed from their systems.

I am writing to Tesco not because I feel I can change them alone but because if they have enough customers who don’t go for their appalling antics then maybe they’ll be forced to change in the long run…if nothing else I am curious at their response to my letter (which I may publish on the blog)… Will they try and persuade me to shop with them? Will they actually remove my data (or state that they have)? Will they even reply?

I don’t know but the bottom line for anyone who is dissatisfied with a shop is that unless you let them know then nothing will ever change…how many people avoid companies without telling them? If a company know you are avoiding them then surely that makes far more sense!

We live in a world where it’s difficult to shop anywhere but a supermarket, I was in Sheffield a couple of weeks back and loved wandering around the indoor market browsing the numerous butchers and fruit stalls, seeing a massive variety of produce compared to Tesco…a few days later I spent ten minutes in a Tescos and felt stressed and fed-up. Consumers (like yourselves) have a choice, we always have a choice, if we didn’t use Tesco they wouldn’t exist, if we don’t campaign against new stores in our areas then they will ultimately take away our choice, taking away every independent shop from our local towns and villages. So think carefully about your shopping habits…think about whether you want a world of Tescos because that’s what we’ll get…if they wipe out all competition then does price matter? They can charge whatever they like…and already do in their ‘Metro’ stores where prices increase when there aren’t other shops in the locality!

Anyway here is my letter to Tesco

Dear Sir/Madam,
In recent months I have been looking into several aspects of your company including the data kept from the use of Tesco Clubcards, the methods which yourselves use to obtain planning permission for stores, the treatment of those involved in your supply line both in this country and oversees and the customer service experience I have personally come across in your stores. To be perfectly honest after this research I am appalled by the practices of your business and treatment of customers, employees, local councils and suppliers.

As a result of my findings I am writing to you to inform you that I will no longer be using your stores either for personal or work use (I should explain that as a youth worker I regularly run residentials for young people which require large shops to cater for), I am also including in this letter my Tesco Clubcard and Key Fob and request that I am removed from your Clubcard scheme, that my online account linked to my clubcard (under the e-mail e-mail address removed) is also removed and that I no longer receive any form of mailing from yourselves.

I appreciate that with the number of your stores in existence avoiding your stores may be difficult but it is something I am prepared to go out of my way to do.

Alongside the information I have been reading on your stores (including Andrew Simms book ‘Tescopoly’) my recent experience of customer services in your stores has been less than helpful. In my most recent (and what shall remain my most recent visit) I aimed to purchase some Fireworks and some shopping but was informed by one of your employees that I was unable to pay for both at once. When I explained that by purchasing these items together I would be applicable for a 5p off fuel voucher under your current promotion I was told that I couldn’t pay for both fireworks and shopping at once and would therefore not be able to benefit from your promotion (as a result I purchased Fireworks from an alternative vendor).

It is on that rather poor experience of customer services that I shall close my letter. I will look forward to hearing from you, if nothing else confirming that my Clubcard membership has been cancelled. I sincerely hope that in the future your company will begin to think about the best for your suppliers, employees and customers rather than your own profits.

Deeper Youth Service

Yesterday evening was the first city centre churches youth service going by the name of ‘Deeper’. The idea of the service was for it to be a way of networking youth work between the city centre churches in Peterborough of which Park Road is one.

We had 33 young people turn out which beat my expectation of 30 by 3…we also had quite a few adults lurking around too. It was great to see some joint youth work for those churches in the city centre who only have 2 or 3 young people and hopefully it’ll become a more regular event and have young people from all sorts of churches involved in the music, the planning, speaking and whatever else it ends up entailing in the long run!

Hillsong – Healer

Healer

Healer

Today the CD of Hillsongs latest release (although a few months old now) arrived in the post. I only ordered it yesterday so was impressed. The thing this this CD is that I’d been debating for a while whether to get it because of it having the song ‘Healer’ on by Mike Guglielmucci.

For those that don’t know this song was (from what I gather) quite the anthem of Soul Survivor…written by a man diagnosed with terminal cancer…a song given to him by God 2 years ago. However in early september it emerged that this was a complete lie and that Mike had fooled his family, his church and the world…he’d even appeared on stage wearing tubes to give the idea that he was ill.

The difficulty is how do we respond to such a problem? The song Healer is actually very powerful, yet introduced to us through a very strange series of events. Soul Survivor have removed it from their live album and it appears to be being taken off newer prints of ‘This is our God’ but should we do this?

My initial reaction was yes however reading into the story a bit deeper and in particular the statement issued by Mike’s Father (link) which stated the following made me think a bit differently

Michael wrote the song Healer because he wanted God to set him free from his addiction but hid it behind the lie of a fabricated illness.

So does it matter if a song was introduced by lies? I don’t think it does, the song is powerful and although not about cancer as mentioned and promoted it is about wanting God to heal us and we all have things we need God to set us free from whether it is a physical illness or any other kind of problem we need healing from, God doesn’t just heal the physical but has the ability to heal addictions, broken pasts and so much more.

I think Christians struggling with the lies of Mike Guglielmucci don’t need to throw away their CD’s with him on, tear up their music for the song and repent to God for ever singing it but in plain terms they need to get over it. When we sing a song it’s about where our hearts are at, it’s about meaning those words to God, it’s about laying ourselves on a metaphorical alter in front of God and pouring our souls out to Him. And can we do that with this song? Yes but if we need to then we must forgive Mike, pray for him in getting help and ask God to help us focus the song onto His mighty self and not the author.

Christmas Mayhem…

I’ve just got home from town and written a blog post (which will appear next thursday for reasons which will be revealed next thursday!) however so not to keep you waiting for a new post here are some thoughts on town…

Firstly town is insanely busy and there seems to be a bizarre mix of Christmas and normality going on…back on the 7th November Queensgate (the shopping centre) launched their decorations and Santa’s Grotto (I can’t help but feel he should still be sleeping until December!) yet with all these decorations there’s no Christmas music playing so although town looks Christmassy it doesn’t feel christmassy (not that I want it to in November I’d just rather it was one way or the other!)…secondly because of all the Christmas stock finding anything in a shop seems to be an impossible task! In the three bigger shops I went into I had to ask where things were which in theory is easy however tracking down a shop assistant requires a lot of energy and wandering!

I think all this is a sign of getting older…there doesn’t seem to be any excitement in shopping in such a incredibly busy place…however I have a solution!

Wander into down during the daytime (before 4!) on a weekday and it’s quite empty, there’s space to breath…you can walk around the shop without tripping over 20 toddlers, 5 walking sticks and being rundown by an old (or just very fat) person in a mobility buggy thing and because there’s not a million people blocking your view you can actually find what you want!

I think I’m going to do all my Christmas shopping on a weekday…or online which of course is even more relaxed and has no risk of being tripped up or run over!

Mark, Tom & Travis Meet!

I’ve spent the last few weeks trying to avoid blogging on the various activities of ex-blink 182 members including the plain crash that killed 4 and only left Travis Barker and DJ AM surviving, however the lastest post on Mark Hoppus’ blog himynameismark.COM is too much to resist!

in the midst of everything else that has happened lately, tom, travis, and i have all spoken together. first through a number of phone calls, and then a couple of weeks ago we all hung out for a few hours. they’ve all been great, very positive conversations. we’re just reconnecting as friends after four years of not talking. it’s a good thing. obviously the first question for a lot of people will be “does this mean a blink-182 reunion?” the answer is none of us know. we haven’t talked about it at all. right now it’s just good for the three of us to see one another, reconnect, and let the past be the past. the events of the past two months supersede everything that happened before. life is too short.

It’s good to hear they’re talking again, I know it doesn’t mean a blink 182 reunion but who knows what the future holds, at the moment from the ashes of Blink 182 we have Angels and Airwaves (Tom) and Plus-44 (Mark & Travis) who are both really good…however there is still something missing from pop-punk world without blink (although apparantly Good Charlotte are aiming to fill the void – link)

Blogging…

Blogging is a strange lifestyle…I say lifestyles because that’s what it is…clicking ‘publish’ after writing a few words isn’t where the blogging line is drawn…a week may pass when nothing appears on a blog yet the blogger’s mind is still at work pondering the next post.

So in the last week I haven’t been silent, I have in fact been pondering my next post. I’ve been thinking about a few things this week which will make their way into blog posts soon but for now the thought of blogging seems to be in my mind.

A blog is a strange thing really…I suppose it’s almost an online diary although often less personal but at the same time can be personal thoughts structured in a form ready to enter the blogosphere and find out what the world feels about them…blogging isn’t about complete thoughts…quantity or even quality it’s just about thoughts…well I think so anyway!

So with that thought I leave you…soon to return for more thoughts!

The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from consumerism and live without shopping. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

Buy Nothing Day is the biggest 24-hour moratorium against consumerism. People around the world will make a pact to take a break from shopping as a personal experiment or public statement and the best thing is – IT’S FREE!!!

Lack of blogging…

I haven’t had a busy week just haven’t thought of anything to blog…it’s nice to so Obama won the elections for president…it’s also been nice to have some time to attempt to study for uni this week…it’s also been nice to pick up Pete Greig’s ‘God On Mute’ in the last couple of days for prep for mondays doodles with the same title.

Tonight was a fireworks/camp fire night…one of my favourite evenings on the youth group calendar…lots of fireworks and no causulties and apparantly young people don’t like soup…

I have a busy day tomorrow, I shall leave the house at 7:30 travel to derby for a day’s Child Protection/Advocate training then return and go straight to ‘The Point’, if I’m lucky I shall get home at 11pm!

I’m also speaking sunday evening at the Yaxley Youth Service which I’m looking forward to…it’s always nice to be asked to be a guest speaker…so it’s a busy weekend

You never know I might think of something interesting to blog!

In other news myself and Joel did some track mixing yesterday so there’s now a properly mixed version of ‘Escape This Town’ on my myspace page!
