She’s getting plenty….

I found this news on the Metro website, it’s about a girl who appeared on the BBC 3 program ‘Sex…with mum and dad’ which I missed, however this girl has had sex with 50 or so guys since losing her virginity at 16, the whole thing seems slightly odd to me largely because it’s such a large amount of guys in such a short peroid of time.

I think the other shock this probably had was that this was a girl in question, I wonder if the shock would have been less if it was a guy who’d slept with 50 girls.

It seems to echo the sex driven society we seem to live in, I know Christians are always banging on the ‘too much sex in society’ drum, and yes perhaps programs like Friends promote sexual promiscuity ie. Rachel and Ross have sex before they say ‘I love you’, however I often find myself wondering how much influence our sex driven society really has on young people and I think it’s one of those 50/50 things, some young people don’t seem to be too effected by the sexual promiscuity promoted whereas others seem to take it on board and I think perhaps rather than it being down to the TV shows and movies we watch perhaps it’s the groups the young people are in.  Peers can have a huge effect on young people and yes, some never give in to peer pressure but some do.

I’m not sure if there’s a set answer to what drove this girl to have sex with 50 guys, I’m guessing enjoyment. The article suggests that her friendship group also had a part to play. However I guess it’s down to the individual and the way they react to pressures.

On that note I end what is probably a jumbled blog about sex…perhaps more thoughts to follow…if I think!

Beauty Of Grace

Everytime I hear Relient K’s song ‘Be My Escape’ the lyric

‘It’s the beauty of grace that makes life not fair’

Seems to leap out at me…I don’t entirely know why but I guess it just echoes that we don’t deserve God’s grace and at the same time turns the phrase ‘not fair’ upside down…we’re used to using it when something doesn’t go our way but how often do we say that something good that happens ‘Isn’t fair’.

Interesting….

(I think I blogged on this a while ago!)

Peterborough…and clocks

So I returned to Peterborough yesterday after 2 whole weeks off over Christmas and New Year which was fun…I got to see lots of people and catch up, spend lots of time with Jo and do a complete lack of work….I’m all unpacked now, just got my diary sync’d with my phone and have a little water powered clock on my desktop which Jo got me for Christmas.

To expand on my excitement at the little water powered clock let me add that this awesome cute little clock not only runs on water but could also be powered on coffee, orange juice, apple juice….and even BEER!

Now although I believe powering a clock on beer could make it smell and more importantly be a waste of good beer imagine the concept of a beer powered clock…it’s so cool!

Moving from beer powered clocks to Peterborough it’s good to be back yet slightly odd…I always find this 2 place lifestyle (Peterborough and Yarmouth) bizarre….it feels odd when you’re first back in either then you don’t like the idea of leaving…I’m quite looking forward to getting my degree out the way and having a job in a place that is home….none of this galavanting business!!!

Catch-22 For Teenagers…

This post is one of those rare youth work posts…but also mixing into a rant and some thoughts on Student Finance, Benefits and other things that the government get wrong…in fact it’s almost the Robin Hood scenario gone wrong….

The Robin Hood scenario is of course ‘Steal from the rich and give to the poor’ and I guess that’s perhaps where benefits are meant to happy…you take people who are richers…who pay tax etc…then you take a poor person who for whatever reason can’t get a job, needs support through university etc…and you give them some of the money the rich tax payer has payed. However for this to work someone has to define rich and poor, and this ultimately creates a ridiculous divide and here’s 2 places where ridiculous benefit rules does my head in…

1 – The Uni Student

If you don’t know how uni fees work then here’s a low-down…all students can apply for a student loan however if you’re parents earn under a certain amount then you are entitled to things like maintenance grants which means you can have some free money which you don’t have to pay back. Now this is all very well, however if your parents happen to earn that little bit more (ie the divide I mentioned above) then you can’t get the extra.

Of course this system of ‘Free money if you’re parents earn rubbish money’ has shortfalls. Of course the bonus is that poor young people can go to uni and have better chances, the shortfalls however mean that students who’s parents earn just over that divide cannot get extra money when in reality their parents aren’t really better off than slightly poorer ones, thus putting them even more out of pocket.

The second flaw is that this is a system purely based on parents income, so you could have a rich parent who gives sod-all to their kids meaning that uni survival is a near impossible.

This all leads onto my second grr to the benefits/money system

2 – Lack Of Incentive

In my work I’ve come accross young people who often through no fault of their own end up in hostels, in these they pay say 15 pounds a week out of their benefits to live, however when this young person gets a job they then have to pay over ten times that, meaning that it’s more cost-effective not to work!

Overall I think although the government are trying to perform a Robin Hood act they are infact to an extent pointing out that it’s far better to not do anything…the incentive to earn high…the incentive for teenagers to get a job just isn’t there because they’ve created a catch 22 whereby the poor will stay poor and the rich stay rich…grr!

Rant over!

My Top 5 Albums Of 2007

So as far as music goes 2007 has been a pretty good year…here are my top 5 albums that have come out in 2007 in no particular order!

Relient K – Five Score & Seven Years Ago (March)

It feels like I’ve had this album forever yet it never actually came out until march this year, but ‘Five score & seven years ago’ by Relient K is an amazing album, mixing catchy pop-punk with a more serious piano side of things. Every song on this album is awesome and I could listen to it over and over again!

Best Songs: The Best Thing, Must Have Done Something Right & Deathbed

Angels & Airwaves – I-Empire

Following their previous album I was pleasently surprised by the added punkiness of the angels and airwaves second album, listening to it left me with that warm fuzzy ‘Tom still has punk in him’ feeling. With some amazing lyrics and catchy, atmospheric and sometimes punky tunes this makes it into my 2007 top 5

Best Songs: Rite of spring, Everything’s Magic, Secret Crowds

Sum 41 – Underclass Hero

2007 also saw Sum 41 surface again with a new album, the Canadian punk rockers return as a three piece with the most surprising album I bought in 2007. I expected them to be as heavy as ‘Chuck’ which although was a good album was dissappointing however Underclass Hero is a cross between ‘All Killer’ and ‘Does this look infected?’ seeing Sum 41 return to their roots with what I think is their best album ever!

Best Songs: Underclass Hero, Walking Disaster

Serj Tankien – Elect The Dead

One of my favourite new albums in 2007 and now one of my favourite albums of all time came to me whilst watching Kerrang TV when Serj Tankien’s video for ‘Empty Walls’ appeared on screen…not knowing the SOAD singer had done a solo project I googled him, myspaced him and bought his album. Elect the dead is as heavy as early System yet at the same time relaxing and melodic. Tankien plays all the instruments except drums and has truly written a masterpiece.

Best Songs: Empty Walls, Unthinking Majority, Saving Us

Tim Hughes – Holding Nothing Back

2007 has also been a brilliant year for Christian music and the final album in my top 5 yet by no means least is Tim Hughes 3rd studio album ‘Holding Nothing Back’, unlike pretty much every other worship solo album out there is not a single rubbish track on this album, Tim Hughes has written what I think is the best Christian Worship leader studio album ever. So hats off to Tim Hughes!

Best Songs: Happy Day, The Highest & Greatest, Take my life

2008 & Greenary…

So just when you thought you’d got used to writing 2007 it’s no longer the right thing to write…2008 is…and as we enter the first few weeks of writing wrong dates I though I’d blog.

This is the first hiynameismark.co.uk blog of 2008 and I hope you all had very cool new years….I spent last night in a few Great Yarmouth pubs with some friends and the very lovely Jo…(a mushy picture is at the bottom of this blog), which was cool, we stayed out until half two and made our way home to our individual pads!

And here we are in 2008…now those people who have been awake through 2007 will have noticed a bit of a plug for being green…and the greenary seemed to have hit me whilst Christmas shopping…now most of my shopping was done online, but the parts of it I spent around shops I spent time trying to use as little carrier bags as possible…and so I thought I’d share a couple of ideas to help you’re greenary n 2008!

1 – Buy A Bag For Life – We all know what a bag for life is, it’s a large, strong bag which you part for 10p of your money for, I think Sainsbury’s ones are the best because they’re made from recycled carrier bags to start with. If your bag breaks you take it back to the shop and they switch it for another.

2 – Keep your bag on your person – If you can put your bag for life in your coat pocket, in your handbag or even down your bra! This way when you’re out and about you don’t need to take a plastic bag from a shop…instead just whip out your bag for life (if you’re bag for life is down your bra I suggest extra care when whipping out so nothing else comes out!) and use your bag for life instead.

3 – If you order online try and recycle the packaging – HMV & Amazon both use cardboard to pack your goods which you can recycle…other companies may use jiffy bags, if so you can open these carefully and use them when you send people things…there’s not a lot you can do with plastic packaging so perhaps suss out which companies use cardboard packaging and use them more!

So there you have my thoughts to help your greenary…I’m sure as I think I shall post more…and now…here’s the mushy picture promised
